For any website to be successful, design and content need to work hand-in-hand. Both elements need to be strong for a site to be effective. Great content doesn't make up for poor design and vice-versa. Here are some things to keep in mind for a successful layout and design:
- Simple navigation for ease of finding information on the site.
- Evoke emotion to connect with the visitor. This can be done with photographs or other graphics.
- Appropriate theme for the image you want to project and the image your audience identifies with. For example, if your audience sees you as a family-owned business, then tell them about it.
- Layout and design is transparent and not overpowering so the visitor can concentrate on the contents of the site.
- Layout and design is consistent on every page of the website. This can be done by using the same colors, navigation, fonts and layout on each page.
