Formative Assessments
- during a phase/lesson/course to determine progress of the learner
- used to help the instructor understand the student learning
- to modify instruction if that learning is not as expected or desired
Summative Assessments
- used at the end of a phase/lesson/course to determine how the overall program performed.
- used to determine final student progress and often lead to grades
- used to modify course materials, but not during the course.
