Effective Communication
Tips for communicating in the Online learning environment
Do …
• Use appropriate greeting and closing. Authors often
leave greetings out, mistakenly thinking that the sender address
is enough indication as to whom the correspondence is addressed
to.
• Use the subject field in all correspondence. This
makes it easier for a recipient to prepare for what they are
about to read, and also useful for filing purposes.
• Use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. Nothing
illustrates less care in e-mail than
repetitive typos and fragmented sentences.
Do not …
• Type in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, it is perceived as yelling,
and will cause unnecessary
confrontation.
Use sarcasm or profanity. In e-mail, tonality is absent; an
attempt to joke can easily be perceived as an insult.
• Illustrate emotions such as smiles or hugs {{{}}}.These
are compared to crackling on a cell phone.
