Purpose of performance/learning objectives

• define what learners should know, do, or feel at the end of a course or training
• can be performance of behaviorally based

Performance/learning objectives should include:

• description of performance
• criteria that meets performance
• any conditions important to meeting performance

Instructors should create learning objectives that are:

• specific
• measurable
• clear and easily understood

From these objectives, students should be able to:

• understand the purpose of assignments
• successfully complete assessments
• experiences successful learner outcomes

Cultural considerations:

Some cultures hold a different view of change where stating objectives first may not be effective for the learning environment. Here are some solutions for this situation:

• find out as much as you can about the culture
• discuss and emphasize performance/learning objectives gradually
